New Balance Transorms the 9060 Into a Summer-Ready Mule

The New Balance 9060 has quickly become one of the brand’s most successful lifestyle models in recent years. First introduced with help from Joe Freshgoods, the retro-inspired silhouette found early momentum through collaboration before expanding into a wide in-line lineup. Since then, it’s moved well beyond its initial audience, showing up across everyday wear, fashion spaces, and casual rotation alike.

Now, the model enters a new phase with the introduction of the New Balance 9060 Mule.

The design keeps the core elements of the original intact, including its layered upper, oversized proportions, and segmented sole unit. However, the heel has been removed to convert the silhouette into a slip-on format. The result aligns with a broader shift toward more accessible, easy-wear footwear, where convenience and comfort are prioritized over traditional structure.

Material builds remain consistent with the 9060’s established mix of mesh and synthetic overlays, while the exaggerated midsole tooling carries over unchanged. The open-back construction offers a different use case, positioning the shoe closer to casual, everyday wear rather than its original performance-inspired roots.

Five colorways have already surfaced ahead of the model’s debut, including tonal black, white, grey, cream, and a darker pair with subtle color accents reminiscent of classic "Brazil" sneaker colorways. The initial lineup suggests a focus on versatility, with neutral palettes leading the release.

The move follows a growing trend in the industry, in which established silhouettes are reworked into mule or slip-on variations. With New Balance already seeing success in this space through models like the 1906 Loafer, the 9060 Mule continues that direction, adapting one of its most recognizable designs to a new format.

If early interest mirrors that of previous slip-on conversions, additional colorways are likely to follow beyond the initial five.
