If you've been a longtime fan of Nike Air Max, you're likely familiar with a silhouette known as the Air Max 2000 that originally launched in its namesake year. Moving forward, it appears that the Swoosh has re-named the sneaker to the Air Max Ecstasy Plus as retro efforts are scheduled for the next year.

A first glance at the change arrived thanks to Supreme, which included the Alpha Project relic in its Fall/Winter 2026 Collection. As has been the case in the past, the decision to include the obscure design in a seasonal drop energizes the overlooked Air Max before Nike introduces a general release lineup for the sneaker. Compared to Supreme's collaborations, inline editions of the Air Max Ecstasy Plus are expected to land in simple, versatile colorways without any modification to the experimental build introduced at the turn of the 21st century.

Younger generations of consumers haven't been as receptive to the Nike Air Max line as older ones, which could explain why the brand decided to change the official name of its Air Max 2000—a name that is now outdated by 26 years. Supreme's take on the silhouette has been well-received, but it's yet to be determined whether or not that interest will carry over to inline releases of the Ecstasy Plus.

The Nike Alpha Project team developed some of the company's most-experimental footwear styles in history in the late 1990s and early aughts. Another silhouette produced around this era is the Air Tuned Max, a model that features a similar sole unit to the now-Air Max Ecstasy Plus.

When compared to other Nike products from the era, the Air Max Ecstasy Plus features minimal Swoosh branding. Its running-informed build seemed futuristic in the early 2000s, but might feel bland given modern footwear offerings like the Pegasus Plus 2 and Mind 001. Nevertheless, the design provides a glimpse at the brand's heritage while signaling some of the Nike Sportswear styles that are likely to surfaced between now and 2028.

Enjoy detailed shots at some of the early Air Max Ecstasy Plus retros ahead—including a "Triple Black" pair. The sneaker is expected to release via Nike.com, JD Sports, and a variety of other global retailers beginning October 2026.
