The Swoosh's celebration of the Nike Air Max 95's 30th anniversary has brought forth handfuls of compelling styles. And while a lot of attention is being paid to the Big Bubble "Neon" reissue, the brand hasn't forgotten about the sneaker's Ultra-variant.
Launched in 2015 and reworked by Dylan Raasch, the mind behind the industry-shifting Roshe One, the Air Max 95 Ultra brought a sleek, lighter weighing update to Sergio Lozano's original creation. The introduction of the model coincided with the sneaker's 20th anniversary. A "Prototype Neon" helped bring the modified version to the market, and a newly-surfaced "White/Wolf Grey/Cool Grey/Anthracite" option breathes new life into the oft-overlooked silhouette.
At quick glance, the nature and anatomy-inspired design cues inherent to the bold Air Max sneaker reprise their traditional roles. Overlays along the profiles, however, opt for a flush presentation that works in-tandem with FlyWire cables on the sides. The result is a structurally-sound build that sheds some weight when compared to Lozano's initial use of suede panels. Proportions throughout the remainder of the Air Max 95 Ultra also take on slimmer dimensions, which create a more jarring visual at the forefoot. The running-informed sole unit underfoot is less robust than what's found on standard pairs., with no Big Bubble Air unit in sight.
