Since 1964, NIKE, Inc. has amassed an archive of product the size of multiple U.S. football fields. Its latest Air Max 95 Woven sneaker, then, could've pulled inspiration from an extensive list of options, but it might've honed in on an unsuspecting muse from the late-1990s: Mexican footballer Jorge Campos and his self-designed goalkeeper kits.

A native of Mexico's coastal city of Acapulco in the state of Guerrero, Campos familiarized himself with the vibrant colors popular within surfing during his formative years. As such, he drew from his childhood for the designs of his goalkeeper jerseys and shorts, which were produced through the independent brand ACA Sport, founded by Daniel Ríos.

"I always liked the design side of things, the marketing, and it all happened very naturally," Campos told Bolavip México according to ESPN. "I never looked for something different. I wanted to feel comfortable, to wear something I liked and that reminded me of surfing in Acapulco, on the beach."

Ríos also told ESPN that it was Campos' idea to incorporate multi-colored diamonds onto the ACA Sport goalkeeper jerseys.

The newly-surfaced Air Max 95 Woven isn't a collaboration with ACA Sport or Campos; the Swoosh hasn't made any connection to the Mexican footballer either. Yet, when you've seen Campos' Nike-branded kits from his first season with the LA Galaxy (1996-97), the diamond-shaped pattern on the impending Air Max sneaker's insole, and considering that the brand has been building anticipation up for the 2026 World Cup™, the connection becomes sensical, even if unintended.

It's important to note that Sergio Lozano's Air Max 95 has previously launched with woven elements across its anatomy and nature-inspired upper. The Nike By You customization platform has also given users the option to personalize pairs of the AM95 Woven, enabling some of the silhouette's more colorful styles ever.

Colloquially, netizens have called the upcoming Air Maxes the "Post-its" and "Highlighters" due to the shades of eye-catching yellow, green, pink, and orange that run down the profiles. "airmax" branding on the top-of-the-tongue also opts for a multi-colored finish, as does the logo hit on the spine.

Lastly, diamond shapes done in vibrant orange, green, pink, and yellow tones land on the footbed, which sees a navy-colored base.

Today, Campos is still very much part of the Nike Football family, often helping the brand with activations that take place in Mexico. It's likely he will only become more visible in the lead-up to and during the World Cup™ as the tournament takes place across Nike's and his home turfs.
