Reebok Blends Retro & Modern With the Engine A "Pump Omni Zone II"

Reebok Basketball is in its modern era, but the hoops-obsessed team has made a conscious effort to celebrate its rich past on the hardwood. Its latest project reimagines the widely-lauded Engine A silhouette with colors and details borrowed from 1991's iconic Pump Omni Zone II.

Debuted in August 2024, the Reebok Engine A was the brand's first foray into performance basketball in about a decade. The low-top silhouette was introduced to the world by way of WNBA star Angel Reese, and helped inform the sneaker that would become the Reebok Angel Reese 1. Both of these designs leveraged years of athlete insight into high-performing products, but largely existed separately from the variety of Reebok Basketball shoes from the 1990s and 2000—shoes co-signed by the likes of Allen Iverson, Shawn Kemp, and Shaquille O'Neal.

The "White/Black/Orange" Pump Omni Zone II once worn by Dee Brown had long cemented its place in the sneaker pantheon; modern retros allowed diehard fans from the early '90s to further enjoy the high-top, Reebok Pump-assisted sneaker, but retros lacked a connection to today's sport.

The Reebok Engine A inspired by Brown's NBA Dunk Contest-winning shoe is looking to change that.

Michael Hesterberg, Design Director of Reebok Basketball, and company were meticulous in handling such an important piece of the brand's heritage in creating the commemorative Engine A. All of the modern low-top's performance elements are kept intact, and are joined by nostalgic The Pump technology, according to an official product page.

The thematic makeover creates a bridge between present and past while also readying for the Pump Omni Zone II's 35th anniversary in 2027. Non-basketball shoes, then, could also see the same "White/Black/Orange" color-blocking associated with Dee Brown's footwear of choice in '91.
